4 Simple Ways to Care for Your Dreadlocks
Ways to care for your dreadlocks include the following: deciding on baby dreadlocks or hair extensions, using natural hair care products, applying leave-in hair conditioner, and maintaining your dreadlocks.
Just like any other hairstyle, dreadlocks need regular maintenance to keep them looking neat and attractive. Dreadlocks, though, seem like they need more caring and maintenance than other hairstyles. However, it does not have to be that way. Read this article to learn some simple ways to care for your dreadlocks and keep them looking great.
Decide on baby dreadlocks or hair extensions
You need to make a decision on whether you want baby dreadlocks or have the extension counterpart. If you don’t feel comfortable about wearing hair that’s not your own, and you also don’t mind waiting; then baby dreadlocks are for you. However, if you really want to have instant long dreadlocks, then there is no other option but to use dreadlocks extensions. You need to take into consideration that dreadlock hair extensions need more care than the baby dreadlocks, to keep them from being damaged and avoid breakages.
Use natural hair care products
You need to use natural hair care products to maintain the condition of your dreadlocks. Products such as Argan oil, olive oil, hempseed oil, and rosemary oil are all essential oils that will provide great benefits to any hair style, especially dreadlocks. These oils will nourish hair and lock in the hair’s own natural moisture, keeping hair healthy and moisturized. In addition to that, some of these oils also have the ability to protect the hair from the harmful and drying effects of the sun. And since dreadlocks make it hard for the hair’s own natural oil to travel to the entire strand of the hair, the essential oils will also act not only to protect the existing natural moisture, but also to add to it. These essential oils can easily be found in health stores and some grocery stores.
Apply leave-in hair conditioner
On a regular basis, apply a hair conditioner that can be left in place, such as the jojoba oil. Leave-in conditioners that are made of natural ingredients are also very helpful in keeping the dreadlocks soft and moisturized. Extensions dreadlocks, though, cannot use the same leave-in conditioner as the baby dreadlocks. Because extension dreadlocks are prone to become matted and fall flat, you should be careful not to apply too much oil or conditioner to them. However, you can keep extension dreadlocks shiny and vibrant by just misting tiny amount of oil sheen onto the dreadlock extensions.
Maintain your dreadlocks
Just because you’ve already put your hair in dreadlocks, it does not mean that you can now forget about it. You need to regularly maintain it so that it will continue to look neat and attractive. To maintain your dreadlocks, you simply have to twist them regularly using your own fingers or a rat tail comb. Twirl your hair as you move it around each of the locks. You can also apply jojoba oil to your hair by placing a small amount of it on your fingers or at the tip of the comb.
Keep your dreadlocks from snagging on your cotton pillow at night by covering your dreadlocks with a satin scarf. Enjoy your beautiful dreadlocks!
